alcohol percentage and °plato

ALCOHOL PERCENTAGE + ° PLATO

The alcohol percentage is a measure of the amount of alcohol (ethanol) in the beer. This is expressed as a percentage volume (vol%) or the amount of milliliters (ml) of alcohol in 100 ml of beer. The alcohol content is usually given on the label of the beer.

The degree Plato (° P) is a measure of the strength (original wort extract) of the wort from which the beer is brewed, it is the ratio of sugar to the wort. With the saccharometer of Plato one can measure the density of a fluid at 20 º C, the sugarcontent is expressed directly in weightpercentages. Thus the original wort extract content is usually expressed in 'Degrees Plato'. One degree Plato represents one percent malt sugar content in the wort, so 12 ° Plato means that 100 grams of wort at 20 ° C. contains 12 grams of sugar.
